The People of the State of Illinois
vs.
WILLIAM H. ALLEY and ED SHEPHERD

The Grand Jurors, chosen, selected and sworn, in and for the County of Saline in the name and by the authority of the People of the State of Illinois, upon their oaths present:  That William H. Alley and Ed Shepherd late of said County, on the third day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty at and within the said County of Saline with a certain revolver then and there loaded and charged with gun powder and divers leaden bullets which revolver they the said William H. Alley and Ed Shepherd in their hands then and there had and held in and upon the person of one WILLIAM C. RAINS, in the peace of the People then and there being unlawfully feloniously and of his malice aforethought did then and there make an assault and him the said William C. Rains with the leaden bullets aforesaid by them the said William H. Alley and Ed Shepherd shot discharged and sent forth from the revolver aforesaid by force of the gunpowder aforesaid unlawfully feloniously of the their malice aforethought did then and there shoot and penetrate inflicting upon and giving to him the said William C. Rains then and there with the leaden bullets aforesaid to(?) shots, discharged and sent forth as aforesaid one mortal wound in the right side of him the said William C. Rains of the breadth of one inch and of the depth of six inches of which said mortal the said William C. Rains, then and there languished for a short time to wit:  the space of one hour and then at the county and state aforesaid died, and so the jurors aforesaid upon their oaths aforesaid do say that the said William H. Alley and Ed Shepherd him the said William C. Rains unlawfully feloniously and of their malice aforethought in manner and form aforesaid did then and there kill and murder contrary to the form of the statute in such case made and provided, and against the peace and dignity of the same People of the State of Illinois.  James M.
