Submitter: Lynda Leeds (ldmnj@aol.com)
Date: 10 Sep 1999

My great grandparents were listed on both the 1880 and 1900 census as being in Stonefort, Saline, Illinois. Names were Charles ENLOW and wife Mary. I am looking for information on Charles ENLOW. On the 1900 census he stated he was b 44, was 58 years old, had immigrated in 1852, was a naturalized citizen and had been unemployed for 12 months. He is listed as being born in France and the oldest child is listed as being born in 1877 in Kentucky, all the rest born in Illinois, up to my grandmother, Emma Elizabeth b in Stonefort in 1897. Charles died in September of 1900. I have been unable to find him in any death records or obits for Saline County, nor have I found him in the Naturalization records yet. I don't know if he came to America alone (he would have been 8-10 years old) or if he came with family or who they were. Mary ROBERTSON was born in Hart Co., KY and was there in the 1860 census. I don't know if she and Charles met and married in Hart Co., but based on the birth of their first child in 1877 at least they probably married (in 1875) in Kentucky somewhere. Any help would be much appreciated. I have info to share on their descendents.

I am researching steam bakeries of the mid-1800's, and I am trying to understand exactly how steam was used in the process. Was it used to drive machinery that maxed ingredients? Was it used to move product from one part of the bakery to the next? Or was it used soley to run steam through pipes, thereby heating the ovens? Any help in this would be greatly appreciated. Surnames: LANDS LAND BARTON
Submitter: Jane Lands (Butch2Jane@aol.com)
Date: 14 Jul 1999

Looking for anyone with information on Land family that I found in 1850 Saline Co.Fed.Census. Father is Reuben, mother Rhoda, children are Thomas, William, etc. What brought me to Saline County was the fact that these same people are listed in the 1870 Il.Census Index as being Lands, not Land. My interest is because my husband's greatgrandfather was William Lands who died in Farmington, Mo. and was the son of Nancy Barton from Clark Co., Il and William Lands from Il.or Ind.(seen both ways). My husband's gggrandfather has been very difficult to find and document. Wonder if somewhere along the line his name was ever Land, not Lands. My Wm.Lands would have been born around 1840 or so, just like the William Lands in the 1850 Saline co.census. If anyone is familiar with this family's descendants, and the proper spelling, please contact me. It could be my link to William Lands, so far the most difficult ancestor to find, even though it wouldn't seem that difficult. Thank you.
