Gallatin County, Illinois SHUMATE, George W. , born 06-07-1864?, Gallatin County, IL, son of Aunto/Anuto SHUNMATE and _________ ABBOTT. Have only seen a Hugh Francis SHUMATE/SHOEMATE m. on 12-23-1854, Gallatin County, IL . His wife's name was Elizabeth J. ABBOTT. Per his marriage application in DuBois County, IN, his spelling for last name was SHUMATE. During his lifetime it was SHOMATE(as we knew it) and SHOEMATE in his obituary. Would like to find parents of George W. SHUMATE, so that we know which branch of the Jean Baptiste DE LA CHAUMETTE tree we belong to. Would like to find Elizabeth J. ABBOTT's parents and families, too. When George died in Princeton, Gibson County, IN, he was buried in the IOOF Cemetary, one grave next to his is that of a Lucinda SHOMATE, some believe it to be a child, but according to sexton at cemetary, he doesn't have any record of where she came from or who she is. I only speculate that Lucinda could be the late wife of Joel F. SHOMATE who had married a Lucinda A. ELDER in Saline County, IL October 07, 1875. Any help on the SHUMATE-ABBOTT families would be greatly appreciated. Will share rest of family information to others searching for same family lines. George W. SHOMATE/SHUMATE/SHOEMATE was my paternal ggrandfather. In George's obituary, it mentioned a borther still living in Flora, Clay County, Illinois.

SURNAMES: GRIMES
CONTACT: Annie Schaff

I am interested in obtaining any information I can on James W. GRIMES. My great-great-great grandfather, James W. GRIMES enlisted in the Union Army shortly after his son, William GRIMES was wounded at Shiloh and died of his wounds on his way home.

James had two children, William and Hannah. His wife's name is not known William was married to Berthena STRAHAN GRIMES. They had three children: James, Charles Monroe, and daughter Willie.

My query is to ascertain whether or not the James W. GRIMES who enlisted in Company H, 120th Illinois Infantry in Saline County, is indeed my great-great-great grandfather.

According to family history, he "raised fine horses" in Illinois, moved to Texas for his health, and later returned to Illinois when the Civil War broke out where he enlisted.

Any help regarding this soldier would greatly appreciated!!
