Dedicated to the memory of Wanda I. Thomas and Fred H. Bramlet

Bramlet cemetery, situated in Section 26 of Raleigh Township in Saline Co., Ill., is located about two miles north of Muddy, Ill., three miles south of Raleigh, Ill., and about three and a half miles southwest of Eldorado, Ill. To visit the cemetery, take the central road from Muddy north about two miles to Bramlet Cemetery Road. The cemetery is about one-half mile east. Or take Route 34 south from Raleigh about one and a half miles, turn east and travel one and a quarter miles, then turn south and travel a half mile to Bramlet Cemetery Road.

Bramlet Cemetery was established in the Bramlet Settlement of Gallatin (now Saline) Co., Ill., circa 1838, according to the late Wanda I. Thomas and Fred H. Bramlet. The rural graveyard, located on land then owned by Coleman Brown Bramlet, probably was established at the death of his young daughter Manerva on Sept. 5, 1837. Although her grave is no longer marked with an inscribed stone, there are four very old and worn stone grave markers in the cemetery. (The oldest grave with an intact inscribed marker is that of Malinda Easley, who died in 1855. She is second wife of Coleman's older brother Henry "Harry" Bramlet.) Before 1837-38, most or all Bramlet family members were buried in Wolf Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery near Eldorado. Wolf Creek Cemetery is situated on land originally purchased by one of Coleman Brown Bramlet's maternal uncles, Coleman Brown, in 1816. Both of Coleman Brown Bramlet's parents, Elizabeth Brown, who died circa 1830, and Revolutionary War veteran Reuben Bramlett, who died in 1844, are buried there.

Coleman Brown Bramlet came to Illinois from Christian Co., Ky., with his parents and siblings at the age of 15 or 16 in 1817-18. He first farmed with his father and later bought his own home farm, which adjoined Reuben's homestead. Bramlet Cemetery, comprising about two acres, is located in a small grove of trees just southwest of the site of Coleman's log cabin on Union Grove Farm. The cemetery is surrounded by land that has been farmed by Bramlets and their descendants for 180 years. Coleman's home farm was passed down to Hezekiah Bramlet, who officially donated land to the cemetery. His grandson Fred H. Bramlet later inherited the farm and was actively involved in the care and maintenance of the cemetery until his death in 1987.

Fred Bramlet was one of many who served as officers of Bramlet Cemetery Association, formally organized eighty-one years ago by a group of family members to manage, administer and maintain the site. The State of Illinois granted the association charter on Feb. 27, 1918. The petition for organization was signed by Coleman Brown Bramlet's son Hezekiah Bramlet and by John N. Bramlet, Q. (Quincy) A. Bramlet, Joseph H. Bramlet, W. R. Joiner, Will Dunn, J. Nelson Thomas, R. H. Bramlet and Robert Moore. In March 1918 Hezekiah Bramlet donated land through his father's original homestead for the first cemetery road. (John N. Bramlet later donated some land west of the cemetery to the association for the current road.) John P. Upchurch surveyed the cemetery on March 11, 1918. Hezekiah Bramlet then deeded the cemetery land to Bramlet Cemetery Association on March 14, 1918.

In 1920 the association erected a woven wire fence to keep livestock out of the cemetery. Later wild and cultivated roses were planted along the fence to enhance the natural beauty of the small rural cemetery. The roses grew on the fence for many years until it was removed in the 1970s after it deteriorated and became entangled with brush. Several large old shade and cedar trees grow in and around the perimeter of the cemetery. Maintenance and administration, funded mainly by memorial gifts and donations, is still managed by Bramlet Cemetery Association.

Today the cemetery contains more than 150 graves. Information from grave marker inscriptions and family members was gathered for this survey in August 1978, August 1993, and October 16-17, 1998. More inscriptions, information and photographs will be added in the future. To share additional information about those buried in the cemetery, please correspond with Deborah G. Dennis at R.R.3, Box 321, Lake Bracken, Galesburg, IL 61401, or E-mail: ddennis@galesburg.net.

Coleman Brown Bramlet, son of Elizabeth Brown and Revolutionary War veteran Reuben Bramlett, was born in Princeton, Caldwell Co., Ky. He died in Saline Co., Ill. He was named after his maternal uncle Coleman Brown, an early settler of Saline County. Coleman Brown Bramlet came to Illinois with his parents and siblings in 1818 from Christian Co., Ky. He married Susannah Upchurch, daughter of Mary Ellen Simmons and Samuel Upchurch, on July 17, 1823, in that portion of Gallatin County that later was used to create Saline County in 1847. Susannah was born in Lebanon, Wilson Co., Tenn., and died in Saline County. She and her extended family came to Illinois in 1819. Coleman established and donated land for Bramlet Cemetery and founded Union Grove Baptist Church. Coleman and Susannah were members of Bethel Creek Primitive Baptist Church in 1826, Wolf Creek Primitive Baptist Church in 1830, Raleigh Missionary Baptist Church in 1843-1881, and charter members of Union Grove Baptist Church in Bramlet Settlement in 1881-1889. Before Coleman's death when Dr. Frederick F. Johnson amputated one of his legs, Coleman selected his gravesite in Bramlet Cemetery and had the leg buried in it.
