Surnames: OWEN OWENS HAYES GIBBS SHAW SUTTERS GWIN
Submitter: Mindy Powell (MAP1202@Prodigy.net)
Date: 27 Mar 2000

I am looking for more information on Jeremiah Owens, my Great Great Grandfather. From all my research, I have discovered that Jeremiah was of the Mormon Faith. He was married to Susan Ann Hayes in Gallatin Co., Ill , on June 15, 1845 and married Nancy Jane Gibbs in Saline Co., Ill., on June 3, 1866. He resided in Saline County since 1850. He purchased 4000 acres in 1855 in Saline County and probably had a saw mill. The 1860 Census he has disappeared or was not counted. But in the 1870 Census shows him in Saline Co. With the following names Jeremiah Owens b.TN Farmer age 46 Susan Ann b.IL age 47 Luticia J. b.IL Housekeeper age 20 Nancy J. b.IL age 16 George Rainey b.IL age 9 John I. b.IL age 8 John is my Great Grandfather. The odd thing about this census is Luticia J. in 1880 is married to a Samuel Shaw. On their marriage info in 1878, she is listed as Mrs. Luticia J. Owens, which leads me to believe she too was married to Jeremiah. But I do not know her maiden name. But I can not find a marriage record between them at all. Also on the 1880 census for Saline county it is showing 3 Owens children and a shaw child she obviously had with Samuel. Once again I can not find a record of these childrens births. Nor the birth records of Susan and Nancy's children by Jeremiah. And other records I have found do not support some of the childrens records I do have. Any help would be appreciated. I also have Jeremiah's father and his father's father info, I would be more willing to share. Other surnames are; Owen, Sutters, Gwin and others. Thanks, Mindy

John A. Wall appears in the 1850 Census in Jefferson Co. IL in the household of Angus McNeil Grant. He is listed as "John Walls", age 13, giving an approximate birth year of 1837. He was an orphan from Saline Co. IL. He was working in the Mt. Vernon Inn, which was owned by Angus Grant. John Wall went on to be an officer in the Civil War, newspaper publisher, and the author of the 1909 history of Jefferson Co. IL. But, who were his parents? Could he have been related to Angus Grant, whose roots go back to Caswell Co. NC (on the VA border)? A group of Walls from that area settled in Jefferson Co. IL in 1857. They were related to Angus Grant, but John Wall says nothing about them in his history. Does anyone know about a Wall(s) family that died in the 1840's in Saline Co. IL?
